The
Greater Boston Food Bank originally opened its doors in 1979 as the Boston Food Pantry,
and subsequently The Greater Boston Food Bank, Inc. in 1993. Serving as a non-profit
clearinghouse for food donated by the private sector to help those who are hungry, The
Food Bank is New England's largest hunger relief program.
The Food Bank annually distributes 13 million pounds of food, for a total wholesale
value of over $16 million. The food is distributed to a network of more than 900 member
feeding programs (including soup kitchens, food pantries and homeless shelters) throughout
the nine counties in eastern Massachusetts.
A network of more than 3,500 community volunteers donates in excess of 33,000 hours
annually to The Food Bank.
Where The
Money Goes
When it comes to dispersing funds, The Greater Boston Food
Bank far surpasses philanthropic industry standards. For every dollar spent, 95 cents is
expended for program purposes and 5 cents for administration and fundraising.
There are several ways to help end hunger
by donating to The Food Bank:
Individuals:
Financial support is critical to the success of The Greater Boston Food Bank.
Businesses and Organizations: Financial contributions may support
general operations or be restricted to support specific programs.
In-Kind Gifts: In-kind donations serve a variety of needs.
Food Donations: The Food Bank relies on the generosity of approximately 400 food
donors, including supermarkets, wholesalers, manufacturers, restaurants, and others.
